Different Types of Universal Testing Machines

Different Types of Universal Testing Machines

Universal Testing Machines (UTMs) are versatile, high-quality materials testing instruments used to evaluate tensile strength, compression, and a variety of other physical properties. With varying frame capacities, UTMs can accommodate a wide range of testing requirements and be configured with industry-standard grips and fixtures to meet quality specifications.

At Thwing-Albert Instrument Company, we offer two types of UTM machines — the VantageNX Series Testing Systems and the QC-3A Testing System. Both are reliable, accurate, and efficient materials testing instruments, with each optimized for different applications and testing demands.

Vantage Series Testing Systems

The VantageNX series testing machines are designed for evaluating a wide range of materials, including paper, flexible packaging, textiles, and plastic films. Available in multiple frame capacities and travel lengths, these systems provide the flexibility to meet diverse application requirements:

  • VantageNX Tensile Testing Machine: This single-column testing frame features a compact footprint with capacities of 1 kN, 2 kN, and 5 kN, making it ideal for routine quality control and R&D material development. It is well-suited for tensile, compression, and flexural testing, delivering accurate and reliable performance in accordance with industry standards.

  • VantageNX Duo Tensile Tester (5kN): This dual-column testing frame offers a maximum load of 5 kN and a wider testing area, making it ideal for larger specimens and applications requiring greater sample clearance. It is well-suited for tensile, compression, and flexural testing, delivering precise and repeatable results in accordance with industry standards.

  • Vantage-10 Tensile Tester (10kN): This high-capacity testing frame offers a maximum load of 10 kN, making it ideal for evaluating stronger materials that require greater force to meet industry standards. It is well-suited for tensile, compression, and flexural testing applications, ensuring accurate and reliable performance across a wide range of material testing standards.

VantageNX testing systems offer scalable test parameters and can be configured with a variety of grips and fixtures to meet applicable industry standards.

QC-3A Testing System

The QC-3A UTM is a rugged, simplified materials testing instrument that does not require a computer, making it ideal for general testing and routine quality control. Available in three frame configurations, it is well-suited for tensile, compression, and coefficient of friction (COF) testing. While its capabilities are simplified to a built in interface, the QC-3A delivers reliable and repeatable results for standard testing applications.

Its testing parameters are highly adaptable, and a variety of grips and fixtures can be used to configure the machine to meet applicable industry standards.
