Measuring paper and board thickness to EN ISO 534

EN ISO 534 covers the determination of the thickness, density, and specific volume of paper and board. Thickness is a foundational property in this work — it directly influences the performance of materials in their final products — which makes controlled, repeatable measurement essential.

The ProGage Touch Thickness Tester performs this measurement as a precision deadweight micrometer, providing quick and accurate readings on sheeted materials such as paper, board, tissue and toweling, nonwovens, and textiles. Unlike a handheld micrometer, the ProGage Touch controls the pressure exerted on the specimen through a combination of the pressure-foot contact area and deadweight, ensuring accurate and reliable results. Its weighted-lever design reduces the pressure applied to the specimen — significant when measuring materials whose thickness is sensitive to pressure, such as high-loft nonwovens and tissue products — while a rigid frame maintains exceptional parallelism, stability, and precise calibration.

Because test methods differ in the conditions they require, the ProGage Touch offers customizable parameters — measurement speed, dwell time, opening distance, and return speed — along with interchangeable pressure feet, so operators can configure the instrument to a specific method or save custom setups. It can be configured to meet most thickness standards. Adding MAP4 Materials Testing Software provides further insight into how a sample’s thickness changes during the dwell time.
