Coefficient of Friction Testing Equipment

The coefficient of friction (COF) assesses the static and kinetic frictions of materials. The results help quality technicians determine if materials meet the industry standards required for manufacturing QC and product development. Friction measurements can indicate how well a material will move down a production line, or evaluate a component of how packaging will perform in the hands of a customer, it could also address how a package will resist damage during the shipping and handling processes.

Thwing-Albert designs and manufactures testing equipment to measure COF for various industries and applications. The coefficient of friction testers quantify the static and kinetic frictions on materials such as plastic sheeting and film, paperboard, corrugated paperboard, coatings, and polymer and plastic peels.

FP-2260 Friction/Peel Tester

Theย FP-2260ย is a compact testing instrument that is ideal for use in the testing laboratory or on the production floor. ย The test results available include Static COF, Kinetic COF and Slide Angle. ย When paired withย MAP4 Testing Softwareย there are additional real time data reporting capabilities to increase the ability to evaluate coefficient of friction testing results. ย

Coefficient of Friction Sledsย

COF Sleds are an essential part of Coefficient of Friction testing. ย These sleds are available in different weights and styles to meet the material testing needs and the specified industry standards including ASTM, ISO, TAPPI and many others. ย

  • EZ-Sled for COF Testing
Theย EZ-Sledย easily secures a material sample to make COF testing quick and simple. Lift the magnetic closure, place the 2.5-inch by 5.5-inch sample in place and snap each end closed to prepare for testing. This instrument is designed for use with ourย FP-2260 Friction/Peel Tester.
    ย
  • 200g COF Sled
Theย COF Sledย is a standard option to measure the coefficient of friction for paperboard, films and paper materials. The 200-gram (g) sled is placed on the sample and pulled across the material to calculate the friction. This sled is available to meet standards that call for a 200 g sled. ย use with the FP-2260 Friction/Peel Tester, which automatically calculates static and kinetic COF results.
    ย
  • Spring COF Sledย
Theย Spring COF Sledย measures the coefficient of friction of flexible packaging materials. The spring system keeps the sample in place during the testing process. The sled weighs 200 g.
    ย
  • Heated Platen COF Sleds
Ourย Heated Platen COF Sledsย are designed for the heated platen option on the FP-2260 Friction/Peel Tester. Use this sled to measure the static and kinetic coefficient of friction of various materials, including packaging, labels, adhesives and plastic film. Choose between 200 g and 500 g weight options. Available upon request are 1,000 g and 3-pound options.
    ย
  • Self Adjusting Sled for COFย
Theย Self Adjusting COF Sledย measures the coefficient of friction for nonuniform surfaces, coated materials, laminate flooring and cans. The sled is placed on the sample, and the three-ball self-adjusting system moves accordingly to accommodate the surface as the sled is pulled across the material. The coefficient of friction tester, such as the FP-2260 Friction/Peel Tester, will read the COF results.
