The International Federation of Manufacturers and Converters of Adhesive Labels and Related Products (FINAT)ย is aย European Associationย that upholds the standardsย for material testing methodsย guiding the global self-adhesive label industry.
What Are FINATย Testing Standards?
FINAT’s international testing standards aim to establish uniform guidelines for the label industry in Europe and around the world. These standards ensure consistency in the physical properties, quality and performance of materials, further enhancing their capability in industry-specific applications.
FINAT Standards List
The following is a non-exhaustive list of the most common FINAT standards we have equipment for:
- FINAT FTM 1:ย This is the test method for the adhesive force required to remove a self-adhesive material. Measures peel angle at 180 degrees at 300mm/min
- FINAT FTM 2:ย For this standard, the peel angle is 90 degrees at 300mm/min, with measurements taken 20 minutes and then 24 hours after adhesion.
- FINAT FTM 3:ย FTM 3 measures low-speed release force.
- FINAT FTM 4:ย This is the testing standard for high-speed adhesive release force at 180 degrees, going 300m/min.ย
- FINAT FTM 5:ย Test the resistance of adhesives to high temperatures and long-term storage.
- FINAT FTM 6:ย This standard is for testing the resistance of self-adhesives to ultraviolet light.
- FINAT FTM 9:ย The test standard for loop tack testing pressure-sensitive adhesive tape.
- FINAT FTM 10:ย Using a release force of 300mm/minute, this is the test standard for measuring the quality of silicone-coated substrates for laminates.
- FINAT FTM 11:ย This standard tests the force required to peel a self-adhesiveย after brief contact with a silicone-coated material.
Material Testing Equipment to Meet FINAT Quality Standards
Thwing-Albert Instrument Company offers a variety of material testing equipment tailored to meet FINAT testing standards, such as:
- VantageNXย Tensile Strength Testing Machine:ย This universal testing machineย is adaptable to many types of testing standards, including FINAT. It’s simple to operate, available in a single or dual-column frame and has different capacity options ranging from 1kN to 10kN. Fixturesย such as peel fixturesย for 90 and 180 degree testingย andย a loop tax fixtureย will meet FINAT standards.
- QC-3A testing system:ย This is a durable, easy-to-use stand-alone equipment with an RS-232 interface. It can use various fixtures, such as for peel adhesion for FINAT and other quality standards with the proper fixtures.
- FP-2260 Friction/Peel Tester:ย This machineย tests seal strength, 90- and 180-degree peels and T-peel. It also measures the coefficient of friction and is suitable for adhesives, labels, plastic films, and packaging materials.
- FINAT weighted roller:ย This hand roller isย specifically designed to meet FINAT Standard 2.1 for peel testing applications and sample preparation. Available in two different weight classifications,ย this hand-held roller applies even pressureย on pressure-sensitiveย adhesives.
