Description
Versatile Paperboard & Carton Testing with the PCA Score Bend Tester
The ability to predetermine settings in the production of cartons can increase overall efficiency. Maintaining identical package specifications between the producer and the packager has also shown to be of mutual benefit for increasing savings in less reworks, rejects and down-time. The 1270 PCA Score Bend tester can also measure spring back after folding providing critical information for sealing or gluing operations.
- The 1270 PCA measures the force to open or bend paperboard and scored paper carton also corrugated score quality.
- Force data is vital for accurately configuring machinery that controls cartons on form, fill and seal lines and to analyze carton performance for runnability and quality control.
- Maintaining identical package specifications between the producer and the packager has also shown to be of mutual benefit for increasing savings in fewer reworks, rejects and down-time.
Available fixtures
Bending fixture for TAPPI T577
The Bending Fixture is optional and uses a pneumatic clamp that is operated with a foot-control pedal. Pneumatic clamping ensures a secure hold and higher repeatability than manual clamping. The bending plate exerts the force required to bend the sample up to 90°. A set of three reference plates are included that are used to verify accuracy. This fixture meets TAPPI T577, the standard for bending properties of folded cartons and scored paperboard.
The bending fixture measures:
- Maximum force to bend a carton sample up to 90°
- Bending stiffness of paperboard and folded carton materials
- Score ratio of scored vs. unscored paperboard
- Carton fold springback force
Opening fixture
The Opening Fixture measures the maximum force required to open a flat folded carton along score lines. This data can help determine why a folding carton fails to perform properly in a production operation and is vital for accurately configuring machinery on form, fill and seal lines. The opening force mode accepts samples from 25.4 to 457.2 mm (1 in to 18 in) when flat.
COF fixture
The COF Fixture consists of a sample platform and sled. The platform provides a travel distance of 203 mm (8 inches) and quickly mounts to a support plate above the bending fixture, which minimizes time to switch between bending and coefficient of friction testing. The 1270 PCA includes the necessary software to measure static and kinetic coefficient of friction. (Part #1270-3009)
Score quality fixture
The Score Quality Fixture measures score quality of corrugated containers according to TAPPI T829. The fixture mounts to the 1270 PCA Score Bend Tester and produces score break force values for both scored and unscored sections of the sample, which are used to calculate a score ratio and determine a pass or fail result.
